Article in the Journal of Museum Education
I am so excited to share my recent article for the Journal of Museum Education on care-based practices. Here is the abstract:
This essay reflects on the evolving role of museums and art institutions amid social, political, and personal upheaval, proposing a reimagining of these spaces as sanctuaries for healing, mindfulness, and collective well-being. Drawing from spiritual traditions such as Tikkun Olam, Seva, and Dharma, the author advocates for embedding values of compassion, service, and ethical purpose into museum practice. Through contemplative approaches like slow looking, meditative engagement, and creative mindfulness, museums can deepen visitor experiences and foster empathy. Examples from programs at MASS MoCA, Kripalu, Berkshire Art Center and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (with Federico Uribe's art) illustrate how art can support emotional and spiritual growth. The essay emphasizes the need for institutions to begin this transformation internally, prioritizing staff well-being and cultivating inclusive, caring environments. Ultimately, the piece invites museum professionals to lead with intention, re-centering art experiences around human connection, self-awareness, and the pursuit of a more compassionate and equitable world.
